Mothering at Mid-Career: Still juggling
Today is the first day of the new semester. I don’t teach until Wednesday, but it was my daughter’s first day on our campus as a full-time student. After two and a half years elsewhere, she’s spending a semester with us, saving money for a summer trip abroad and getting a different perspective on what it is her parents do all day.
Math Geek Mom: Moving Forward
When my daughter was first learning geometry, she came home one day to proclaim "I know what a ray is, mom. It is a line pointing in only one direction." She then went on to tell me that math was becoming her favorite subject. Of course, this was music to my ears.
What I did today instead of writing my blog
Today was my first day back at work after a 10-day holiday which was a whirlwind of trips up and down the east coast. We arrived home late, exhausted. In early January the campus is eerily quiet. The coffee shop is closed and so are most of the cafeterias. Still, there was plenty of work waiting.
ABC’s and PhD’s: Friends
The end of 2011 was a mad, crazy flurry in our household. Between the season’s added extras: visits from family and friends, shopping for gifts, driving kids around, a science fair experiment (etc) and finishing some high priority work items over the holidays we did manage to catch up on some tasks (and sleep!) postponed through much of the fall. Still, a lot still remains to be done.
Mothering at Mid-Career: 2011 by the numbers
As the new year begins I feel mostly how arbitrary the turning of the year is. The new school year began in August (September for some of you, including both my kids); the western Christian liturgical year, as I noted recently, began in November, and the Lunar New Year won’t come around until later this month.
Long Distance Mom: Family, Foreclosures, Furloughs
My partner, Ted, and I are completing our usual cross-country drive for the holidays--from Chicago to Ohio, N.C. and then Florida — visiting family and friends in various stages of stress and hopefulness. Unfortunately, our ongoing economic crisis is certainly being felt at home.
Mothering at Mid-Career: Evaluation Time
Most of the faculty folks I know are either in the throes of grading or just done. The students have mostly gone home and we are finishing up the dregs of this semester as we prepare for the holidays and, before we know it, the next semester. Those of us whose grades are in may also be able to experience just a bit of what our students are going through now by reviewing our own student evaluations from the semester just past.
