2024 Survey of College and University Chief Business Officers

Inside Higher Ed’s 14th annual Survey of College and University Chief Business Officers was conducted by Hanover Research. The survey included 224 chief business officers (CBOs), mostly from public and private nonprofit institutions, for a margin of error of 6.14%. The response rate was 12%.

On Wednesday, August 14, at 2 p.m E.T., Inside Higher Ed will present a free webcast to discuss the results of the survey. The 2024 Survey of College and University Chief Business Officers was made possible by support from Coursedog, EY-Parthenon, Heliocampus and Laserfiche.

Both the survey and accompanying webcast are based on CBOs' takes on key topics, such as college affordability, cost-cutting strategies, the financial outlook, mergers and consolidations, and artificial intelligence. Specific findings include CBOs’:

  • Views on the affordability and value of undergraduate degrees
  • Insights into steps institutions are taking or considering taking to make degrees more affordable
  • Thoughts on employee turnover and its main drivers
  • Predictions on whether their institutions will be financially better or worse off in a year and the reasons why
  • Knowledge of serious internal merger discussions at their institutions
  • Thoughts on AI’s increasing role in higher education
