The University of Tennessee system Board of Trustees approved a merger with Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn., Friday. The private college will become the University of Tennessee Southern, Knox News reported. It’s the first addition to the university system in more than 50 years and the first public university in southern middle Tennessee.
“We expect that many of our students will have a choice to stay closer to home, and to attend a university in Tennessee that’s affordable, and that provides them accessibility to opportunities that as a small private [university] we were not able to provide,” said Mark La Branche, president of Martin Methodist College.
As a result of the deal, tuition for current Martin Methodist students will fall from $26,000 to $10,000.
