Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the men’s basketball team at Duke University, plans to retire following the 2021-22 season.

Krzyzewski, known as “Coach K,” was hired as head men’s basketball coach in 1980. Over 41 seasons, he led the Duke Blue Devils to five NCAA Division I titles and won 1,170 games over all.

Associate head coach and former team member Jon Scheyer is poised to become the next head men’s basketball coach at Duke, according to reporting by ESPN.

Krzyzewski is one of the longest-tenured head coaches in men's college basketball, surpassed only by Jim Boeheim, who became head coach at Syracuse University in 1976.

Krzyzewski’s longtime sporting rival Roy Williams, head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, retired just a few months ago, marking the end of an era for the Carolina-Duke rivalry.
