Hampton University will make payments on student loans or toward graduation fees for students graduating in the Classes of 2020 and 2021.

The private nonprofit historically Black university in Virginia told students about the financial assistance in a letter Friday, WAVY TV reported. Graduates with federal student loans will receive $500 toward loan repayment, with the money going directly to loans’ servicers. For students without federal loans, Hampton will put $150 toward graduation fees.

In announcing the move, Hampton’s president, William R. Harvey, cited a challenging 12 to 18 months and a recent virtual commencement ceremony that didn’t meet the university’s standards. Harvey wrote that he understood what students missed by not having an in-person ceremony, and Hampton plans an in-person on-campus ceremony in December.
