The University of Missouri Board of Curators approved a new university governance structure Sunday. The new structure will provide more concrete avenues to address potential conflicts of interest and more clearly outline the roles of system president, campus chancellors and a recently established Council of Chancellors.
The board action follows a decision this summer to combine the roles of system president and chancellor of the University of Missouri in Columbia. At the time, faculty at the system’s St. Louis, Kansas City and Rolla campuses were concerned the combination would lead to a flagship-satellite model between Columbia and the three other campuses.
“The governance structure approved today by the Board of Curators sets the University of Missouri on a course to become a national model for excellence in higher education governance,” Julia Brncic, chair of the Board of Curators, said in a press release. “Thanks to the thorough work of the Council of Chancellors and the feedback we received from individuals and groups at each university, this new structure ensures each university will have a voice on system issues and increases university collaboration to the benefit of our students and all Missourians.”
Curators established the Council of Chancellors in July.
