Seventeen scientists, scholars, writers and artists from 15 academic institutions were among the 26 winners of the 2019 fellowships from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The grants, commonly referred to as "genius" grants, are awarded to people with extraordinary creativity or potential. The 2019 awards carry a $625,000 stipend. The academic winners include:

  • Saidiya Hartman, professor of English and comparative literature, Columbia University
  • Walter J. Hood, professor of landscape architecture and environmental planning and urban design, University of California, Berkeley
  • Valeria Luiselli, writer in residence, Bard College
  • Kelly Lytle Hernandez, professor of history and African American studies, University of California, Los Angeles
  • Zachary Lippman, Jacob Goldfield Professor of Genetics, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
  • Jeffrey Alan Miller, associate professor of English, Montclair State University
  • Jerry X. Mitrovica, Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science, Harvard University
  • Vanessa Ruta, Gabrielle H. Reem and Herbert J. Kayden Associate Professor, Rockefeller University
  • Josh Tenenbaum, professor, Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Jenny Tung, associate professor of evolutionary anthropology, Duke University
  • Ocean Vuong, assistant professor, department of English, University of Massachusetts at Amherst
  • Emily Wilson, professor of classical studies, University of Pennsylvania
