A memorial to the slaves and other people of color who helped build the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was vandalized early Sunday morning. A statement from the university said that the memorial was defaced with "racist and other deplorable language." The New York Times reported that the vandals urinated on the memorial. The university statement said that security video indicates that one of those involved "is known to be affiliated with the Heirs to the Confederacy." The university statement also said an art installation was vandalized.

Kevin M. Guskiewicz said in the statement, "These events challenge not only our most fundamental community values, but also the safety of our campus. Lawless behavior will not be tolerated, and those found responsible will be held accountable for their actions."
