California's community college system said Friday that it has hired Ajita Talwalker Menon as a special adviser to the system's chancellor, Eloy Ortiz Oakley. Menon previously worked as a higher education policy adviser in Barack Obama's White House, with additional stints at the U.S. Department of Education and on Capitol Hill.

She helped develop Obama's free community college proposal as well as other initiatives. The California system said Menon would work on financial aid and loan policy, federal advocacy and external partnerships.
