From my first day as editor in chief at Inside Higher Ed, I’ve felt a big responsibility not to break anything. By “anything,” I mean all the stuff that Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman built over the past two decades: the trust of our loyal readers, our reputation for rigorous and objective reporting, and our news edge. At the same time, I’ve had work to do to get the right team in place to take our newsroom into the future. Pulling together my A-team of senior editors has been at the top of my to-do list.

Today, I’m thrilled to announce whom those newsroom leaders will be. I’ve appointed Susan Greenberg to be Inside Higher Ed’s new managing editor. She will oversee the newsroom and work with other senior editors to set our news agenda and develop newsroom talent.

Sue joined Inside Higher Ed in 2021 as a senior editor focused on admissions and enrollment, business and leadership, and student life. The job was the perfect blend of her two careers: journalism and education. She spent 20 years as a writer and editor at Newsweek magazine, where she covered everything from international affairs to arts and culture; as a freelancer, she also contributed essays to The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Atlantic, among other publications. At the same time, she learned the ins and outs of academe as a faculty member, teaching English and journalism at Phillips Academy, Middlebury College and Champlain College in Vermont.

Bob Moser will be our new features and analysis editor, spearheading a new desk in the Inside Higher Ed newsroom. Our deep dives will complement our cutting-edge daily news coverage, giving reporters more time to be creative, analyze trends and connect the dots for our readers.

Bob is a native North Carolinian who’s been a senior editor and writer for several national and regional magazines, specializing in news features and commentary on U.S. politics, religion and LGBTQ+ rights. A former editor in chief of The Texas Observer, he has also held senior posts at The Nation, The American Prospect, National Journal, The New Republic and Texas Monthly. Bob has reported and written for The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Columbia Journalism Review and The Washington Post Magazine, among others. He is the author of Blue Dixie: Reawakening the South’s Democratic Majority and the winner of awards including the SPJ Green Eyeshade and the GLAAD Award for best magazine journalism.

News will, however, remain at the heart of what we do. I’m delighted to announce that Katherine Knott is our news editor. Over the past two years, Katherine has made a name for herself among our readers and across higher education for her in-depth coverage of federal policy at Inside Higher Ed. She’s a talented journalist with a keen news sense honed by years of local reporting. Katherine will direct our daily news coverage and support reporters across all beats. Before joining Inside Higher Ed, she reported on K-12 education for local newspapers in Virginia and Kentucky. She got her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

I’m excited for the future of Inside Higher Ed. I also know that changes are always a little scary—and I’m still worried I might break something! But as the presidential campaign heats up and the notions of academic freedom, open debate and a college degree are called into question, I’m reminded of how privileged we higher education journalists are. We get to spend every day telling the stories of the people who are committed to the democratic mission of higher education, celebrating their achievements and being a critical friend when they fall short. Inside Higher Ed will continue to do our part in that mission, serving the higher education sector through robust and fair journalism. We look forward to remaining the first thing you read when you wake up.

I’m still getting to know everyone in the sector, and I’d love it if you’d reach out to say hello or to give us some feedback or a story tip. You can get in touch at editor@insidehighered.com.

Sara Custer is the editor in chief at Inside Higher Ed.
