To the Editor:
A June 26 IHE news article on Executive Leadership asks "Should College Presidents Criticize Political Candidates?” This is the wrong question to ask. The right question is, “Should college presidents defend the mission and values of their institution?”
The answer depends, of course, on what one believes the mission and values of the institution are. For those colleges whose mission is the development of critical thinking skills and whose values include intellectual honesty and integrity, the answer is that college presidents should criticize any persons, institutions, or movements that act in opposition to critical thinking, intellectual honesty or integrity.
President McGuire, of Trinity Washington University, understands this.
Knowing the right thing to do is not that hard. Doing it is leadership.
