Mothering at Mid-Career: There and Back Again

Tolkien’s subtitle for The Hobbit, “there and back again,” is a not-so-subtle reminder that his protagonist — supposedly much like Tolkien himself — is not much of a traveler. While he makes the journey with the dwarves that restores their gold to them — and nets him the ring that sets The Lord of the Rings in motion — he would really, really, rather be at home than on the road.

"Commons in a Box" & the Importance of Open Academic Networks

A look at a new development project from CUNY Academic Commons -- "Commons in a Box" -- which will allow universities to create their own academic networks.

The Joaquin Luna DREAM Act

Joaquin Luna, a high school senior in California, committed suicide on Friday. He wanted to become an engineer to provide a better life for his mother, but realized that his status as an illegal immigrant made that impossible. Chairside Drama

Of the things I never expected from being an administrator, bearing witness to dramas is at the top. I had my fair share of dramas from working with artist-colleagues before, but outside of academic settings. As drama goes, they produced a mix of happy and sad endings that were tough for the conscience and for relationships.

Mixed Feeling About College Athletics: Bahamas Edition

Don't PROTECT IP !

Obama's been traveling the country making "non-political" speeches about how this Congress can't accomplish anything, so he has to do whatever he can by executive action alone. Unfortunately, Congress seems about to push back against the President's characterization by doing something, and the something they're likely to do is pretty awful.

Failure

The news from the congressional supercommittee was not surprising. No budget deal – meaning we now will have an automatic triggering of across-the-board budget reductions. What a bad decision by our Congressional leaders, what a bad impact for our economy, and what a failure to read the will of the public.
