Campus ID cards aren't sexy. It's true. However, campus ID cards provide access to a variety of both on-campus and off-campus services. The number of services that cards provide is astounding when you start to look at all of the ways in which students, staff, and faculty can use them. Cards provide access to campus buildings, payment capabilities, appointment check-ins, and library resources acquisition. Some cards even let you use them for taxi rides! The most popular method of operating a campus card solution is via a single card. One card to rule them all… Marketing a campus card's services can be a challenge. My advice: focus on the functionality and the value that the card provides.
In my never-ending quest to find captivating higher education videos on YouTube, I came across three very different clips that involve campus cards:
Vanderbilt University's "Piggyback Mayhem" video is entertaining and educational. It serves as the perfect mix of ridiculousness coupled with a message of communal safety. Unauthorized access to residence halls is a big deal. Educating a campus community that their cards provide access, but only to authorized persons, is phenomenally important.
Carleton University's Campus Card Office does a great job with their social media channels. I recently stumbled upon this YouTube video that depicts the winner(s) of a campus card contest. The best part of the Carleton University Campus Card video is that they messed up and then they did the right thing. It was a brilliant marketing move. And, it looks like it definitely got students to use their campus card to make purchases at campus vending machines.
The UC San Diego Campus Card orientation video is cute. There, I said it. Now, I don't know how effective it will be or where it is primarily being shown, but the stop motion effect is engaging. They may want to place the informational content of the video in the description so that people who can't see can still access the information in the clip. My prediction: A lot of offices will copy the stop motion of this video. With a voiceover and perhaps a series of 1 minute clips, this video could be a campus card star!
The Dollar Shave Club video isn't a higher education video. It's also not a campus card video. However, what if a campus card office took the concept of showing a campus card's value and coupled it with an entertaining delivery? The Dollar Shave Club video is mesmerizing in that it takes something simple - razor blades and shaving - and makes you understand that there is a different way, a better way.
