Hundreds of leaders of public higher education will gather in Baltimore in July for a three-day meeting, The Future of Public Higher Ed, organized by Inside Higher Ed.

The preconference activity relates directly to one of the important issues facing public higher education: recruiting students, not just for this fall but for years in the future. As educators know, using the high school years well is essential for students to be prepared for college.

So with help from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, 10 of the presidents who will be attending the conference will spend the morning of Monday, July 8, meeting with sixth to eighth graders from Baltimore. The presidents will provide individualized coaching to the students about preparing academically, the availability of financial aid and more. The students will have a rare opportunity to get advice from those who lead colleges and universities.

Presidents participating are:

  • William J. Behre of Slippery Rock University
  • Kevin E. Drumm, Broome Community College of the State University of New York
  • Mildred García of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities
  • Freeman A. Hrabowski III of the University of Maryland Baltimore County
  • Javier Miyares of the University of Maryland Global Campus
  • Jay A. Perman of the University of Maryland, Baltimore
  • Roger A. Ramsammy of Hudson Valley Community College
  • Steve Robinson of Owens Community College
  • Linda Schott of Southern Oregon University
  • John Weispfenning of the Coast Community College District
