The University of Alberta in Canada wants nonacademic staff to repay “overpayments” and agree to other retroactive pay cuts, the Edmonton Journal reported. According to a contract proposal obtained by the newspaper, the university is seeking to slash pay and wages by 3 percent for all members of the Non-Academic Staff Union, dating back to March 31. “Overpayment” between March 31 and whenever the contract takes effect will be “reconciled on a repayment schedule as agreed by the parties,” but no later than March 2022, according to the proposal.
The University of Alberta reportedly said, “We seek an agreement that mitigates job loss and balances the value we place on the critical work of support staff with the financial realities faced by the university.” The union declined comment. The provincial government has cut funding for the university over the past several years.
