Five Black police officers sued the University of Washington last week over racial slurs and racist incidents they have faced on the job, The New York Times reported. The Black police officers describe behavior such as a superior offering a drink that turned out to be flavored with watermelon and saying that he thought Black people liked that fruit. One officer said bananas were placed in front of her locker with a note calling her a “monkey.”

University officials said they were “stunned” by the legal claims, and they said administrators had not previously been made aware of any of them. “Any one of the incidents described here would prompt an immediate investigation and appropriate disciplinary action based on the investigation’s findings,” said Victor Balta, a university spokesman.
