Nikole Hannah-Jones will not teach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She announced in an interview today with CBS This Morning that she made a "very difficult decision." She called it "not a decision I wanted to make."
Hannah-Jones was granted tenure last week by the UNC board. But the board had earlier put off a tenure vote. This angered Hannah-Jones and her many defenders, who noted that, in the past, those who had held the chair she was offered had been granted tenure immediately. Hannah-Jones is Black; they were white.
Howard University offered Hannah-Jones a tenured position, and she accepted it. She will be the Knight Chair in Race and Journalism, and she is founding a Center for Journalism and Democracy at Howard.
