A former diversity administrator at Liberty University in Virginia has sued the evangelical Christian institution for $8 million, saying his firing violated the Civil Rights Act and the Virginia Human Rights Act, Religion News Service reported.

Kelvin Edwards, a former Liberty football star who went on to play in the National Football League before returning to Liberty to serve as the executive vice president of management efficiencies and diversity, alleges he was fired because acting Liberty president Jerry Prevo does not value diversity.

Liberty said in a statement it disputes Edwards’s claims and the president and the university “are fully committed to racial and ethnic inclusion and diversity throughout Liberty.”
