Grove City College launched a special inquiry earlier this year into whether it’s suffering from mission drift, in response to backlash regarding its diversity work. One specific concern of parents and alumni was that a new education elective taught by one of the campus’s only Black scholars, which included the book How to Be an Antiracist on its syllabus, was promoting critical race theory. (The class was not about critical race theory.)
Grove City’s inquiry is now complete, and the college says it “has not changed. It remains a Christ-centered, conservative institution. GCC’s [Board of Trustees] and president are firmly committed to its historic vision, mission, values, and character.” The special committee that wrote the report recommended that EDU 290, the class in question, be redesigned and that the college restore the word “conservative” in its vision statement, among other changes.
