Lake-Sumter State College president Heather Bigard, who was on administrative leave for unspecified reasons, resigned abruptly late last month, The Leesburg Daily Commercial reported.

Bigard had been placed on administrative leave as of Aug. 22, and a college spokesperson told the newspaper that she voluntarily resigned that same week. The reasons for the former president being placed on administrative leave and her sudden resignation remain unclear.

Documents obtained by the Daily Commercial referenced the board’s right to suspend or fire Bigard, with or without cause, stating, “Incidents that violate LSSC State College Board Rules, procedures, policies and rules” are subject to disciplinary action.

The newspaper also reported that it was looking into whistleblower complaints.

Bigard’s abrupt exit comes after two years on the job. Prior to ascending to the presidency in 2022, Bigard served as Lake-Sumter’s provost and executive vice president.

The Board of Trustees will now look to fill the top job at the public institution, which is part of the 28-member Florida College System.
