The Southeastern Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association has fined the University of Texas at Austin $250,000 after its fans pelted their home field with detritus during a football game on Saturday, The Austin American-Statesman reported.
Texas later lost the game to the University of Georgia.
The SEC is also requiring UT to use “all available resources, including security, stadium and television video,” to try to identify the individuals who threw objects onto the field or at the Georgia players. Those identified will be banned from all Texas athletic events for the remainder of this academic year.
The university will have to provide a report to the SEC about how it investigated the incident and how it plans to prevent similar misbehavior in the future. Texas must also review and revise its game management and alcohol availability policies, though alcohol sales have not been prohibited.
