Portland State University spent five months and $1.23 million to repair its library, which was damaged by pro-Palestinian protesters who occupied the building for four days in the spring, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.
The cost covered painting, repairing windows and replacing broken furniture and equipment, such as computers. It is unclear how much of the repairs will be covered by the university’s insurance. The protesters largely avoided damaging any books.
According to university officials, more repairs will likely be needed to the library, which reopened on Sept. 16.
“This is a big building. It’s five floors and it’s a little maze-like,” Cris Paschild, university archivist and head of special collections, told OPB. “So we are sort of resigned to continue finding just all these little things that we’ll need to fix up and address over time.”
