A former office manager for Dartmouth College’s nonprofit student newspaper has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for stealing from the organization, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

The former employee, Nicole Chambers, stole $223,000 from the paper, where she was employed from 2012 to 2021. She pleaded guilty to wire fraud in April.

Prosecutors said that Chambers transferred money from the paper's bank account, debit card and Venmo and PayPal accounts to her personal accounts to fund “her high lifestyle,” including plane tickets and hotel rooms.

Chambers’s attorney, meanwhile, called for a lighter sentence, arguing that Chambers cannot seek work to earn the money she must repay the newspaper if she’s in prison. The attorney also noted she has no prior criminal record and was suffering mental health challenges during the period when she stole the funds.
