Vice President Kamala Harris’s sorority is launching its first political action committee—a move that will allow Alpha Kappa Alpha to raise and spend money on behalf of political candidates.

The sorority and other historically Black sororities and fraternities, collectively known as the Divine Nine, have planned to launch a significant get-out-the-vote effort to mobilize thousands of members. But because the Greek Life organizations are nonpartisan and nonprofit, they can’t and don’t endorse candidates.

Forming the PAC, AKA 1908, will allow Alpha Kappa Alpha to get more involved in supporting Harris’s bid to the White House. Harris was a member of AKA when she attended Howard University and has been a regular at the organization’s efforts.
