Concerned about Project 2025,  a blueprint for conservative governance crafted by the Heritage Foundation, Virginia House Speaker Don Scott, a Democrat, has asked Republican governor Glenn Youngkin to remove Lindsey Burke from the George Mason University Board of Visitors.

Burke, director of the Center for Education Policy at Heritage, co-authored the education chapter of the plan, which is intended as a manual for Republican Donald Trump if he is elected as president this fall. Youngkin appointed Burke to the GMU board in 2022, prior to the release of Project 2025.

Heritage’s 900-plus-page plan calls for privatizing student loans and dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, among other conservative policy priorities crafted by Trump-world figures.

“After I learned @GovernorVA appointed an extremist author of Project 2025, I asked the governor to remove this individual from the Board of Visitors at George Mason University—a bedrock institution, that promotes diversity, leadership, and excellence,” Scott wrote on X.

The request, sent on Friday, was rejected by Youngkin the same day.

“I have no intention of removing her and there is no basis for doing so,” Youngkin wrote in response to Scott, according to a copy of the letter shared on social media, which highlighted Burke’s professional background and noted that her appointment was confirmed by state lawmakers.

Critics have raised concerns recently that George Mason’s board is becoming politicized, arguing that Youngkin has appointed “conservative ideologues” to oversee the university.
