The president of California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, Tom Jackson Jr., has announced he will step down from his position in August and become a tenured faculty member.

The university received national attention in April as pro-Palestinian student protesters occupied a campus building for multiple days, resulting in a full shutdown of the campus, with all classes moved online. The occupation ended in the arrests of 31 individuals. Jackson received criticism for his handling of the situation, with 320 faculty members signing a letter calling on him and another high-level administrator to resign.

Jackson served as president of Cal Poly Humboldt for five years and oversaw its transformation into a polytechnic university. The university will name an interim president soon and launch a national search for its next president.

“Cal Poly Humboldt is an amazing place with special people. I have had the privilege to work alongside scientists and future scientists, teachers and future teachers, artists and future artists, engineers and future engineers, and leaders and future leaders. Like many of you, I wake up every day and remember what a gift I have been given: to have the opportunity to inspire and lead others. Your work makes a positive difference for our students. Please never forget that,” Jackson said in a statement released by the university.
