The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges has hired Framroze M. Virjee, president emeritus of California State University at Fullerton, as its new president and CEO.

Virjee succeeds interim president Ellen Chaffee, who stepped in when AGB’s previous permanent president and CEO, Henry Stoever, resigned amid allegations of plagiarism last fall.

In addition to his six-plus years as president at Fullerton, Virjee has experience as the California State University System’s liaison to its governing board. He served as a lawyer before moving into higher education.

“We chose Fram because of his deep experience with many of the issues that boards face today,” Ross Mugler, an AGB board member who co-chaired the search, said in a news release. “He has been in the chair and had to make the call, which gives him insight into, and empathy for, higher education leaders everywhere.”

“Higher education leaders have a lot on their plates right now,” Virjee said in a statement. “There is very little room for error, and the consequences are enormous. Boards can be pillars of strength for their institutions when they are 100 percent engaged and 100 percent committed to their role as fiduciaries and partners.”

And the opposite is true when they are not, he might have added.
