Bloomberg Philanthropies on Tuesday said it would donate $600 million to strengthen the endowments of the four historically Black medical schools in the U.S.

Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College and Morehouse School of Medicine will each receive gifts of $175 million, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science will receive $75 million.

Michael Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and founder of the philanthropy, said the donations were part of Bloomberg’s Greenwood Initiative, designed to help eliminate the racial wealth gap in the U.S.

“We have much more to do to build a country where every person, regardless of race, has equal access to quality health care—and where students from all backgrounds can pursue their dreams,” Bloomberg said in a news release. “Addressing health disparities and underrepresentation in the medical field are critical challenges, and Bloomberg Philanthropies is dedicated to making a difference.”

Dr. James E. K. Hildreth, president and CEO of Meharry Medical College, said in a separate news release that “Michael Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies recognize the enormously important role historically Black medical schools have played and continue to play in ensuring that all Americans receive quality health care, regardless of race or economic status.” He added that the “entire Meharry family extends our profound gratitude to Bloomberg Philanthropies for its ongoing commitment to our mission and its strong statement that investing in diversity and inclusion is essential to creating a healthier America.”
