  • Three suspects were in custody Monday following the shooting of two individuals at North Carolina State University. The suspects -- only one with a university affiliation, a sophomore -- are being charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to a university statement. The two people who were shot early Monday were not affiliated with the university. However, the police investigation led to the arrest of another sophomore, who was charged with maintaining a dwelling for the manufacture, sale and distribution of a controlled substance.
  • The student newspaper at Montclair State University has gained its independence and will no longer rely for funds on the student government -- a system that led to disputes and concerns about the publication's First Amendment rights, The Star-Ledger reported. In the future, the paper will be financed directly through student fees at the New Jersey university and through advertising.
  • The Princeton Review's annual college rankings -- while not breaking new ground in the science of survey research -- always attract attention for the top party school. This year's winner is the University of Florida. Coverage in The Gainesville Sun (see especially the video) juxtaposes administrators who could do without the notoriety with students who seem quite happy to claim their victory.
  • Orientation programs for new students frequently include warnings about alcohol abuse, hazing and whatever vices are hot in a given year. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is adding warnings for new students about the dangers of "ped-texting" -- sending cell phone text messages while walking -- the Chicago Tribune reported. Doing so while crossing streets is particularly dangerous, students will be warned.
