To the relief of university officials, the Commerce Department on Monday formally announced that it would create a panel to advise it on the potential impact of changes in the "deemed export" policy. Earlier versions of proposals under the policy were seen as likely to discourage foreign scholars from studying or working in the United States.
The University of Missouri at Columbia has turned down requests from Ken Lay, the former Enron executive now on trial, to shift a $1.1 million gift to Hurricane Katrina relief or to return it, the Associated Press reported. The funds were meant to endow a chair in economics, which remains vacant while the university conducts a search to fill it.
About 50 students turned their back on Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice when she spoke to graduates of Boston College Monday, and others protested more loudly outside, but the commencement took place without disruption, The Boston Globe reported. Some students and faculty members have said that Rice's role promoting the war in Iraq was inconsistent with the college's Roman Catholic teachings.
