  • The board of Mercer County Community College fired Richard Rose as president of the New Jersey institution Tuesday, The Trenton Times reported. Board members questioned Rose's financial management, but he denied wrongdoing and his lawyer pledge to sue the board. Faculty members strongly back Rose and urged the board to retain him, The TImes reported.
  • A coalition of nonprofit scientific and medical publishers has proposed to the National Institutes of Health a system in which many more research findings could be made public, free and online. The proposal comes amid continued debate over how to speed up the availability of medical findings without confusing members of the public with unreliable reports.
  • Some Florida colleges remain closed because of Hurricane Wilma. The University of Miami has suspended most operations for the rest of the week. Although campus damage was minimal, the university cited problems restoring power in surrounding areas. Lynn University, in Boca Raton, is also closed for the remainder of the week, while repairing damage and dealing with power outages. Also closed are Florida Atlantic University and Miami Dade College.
  • Ted Gasper Jr., president of Halifax Community College, in North Carolina, should account for $15,000 in questionable reimbursements and benefits, a state audit found, according to The News & Observer of Raleigh. Gasper has denied wrongdoing.
