The Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics has added eight new members and welcomed one former member back to its ranks. Joining the sports reform panel are: Val Ackerman, president of USA Basketball; Bill Asbury, vice president emeritus for student affairs at Pennsylvania State University; Anita DeFrantz, president of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles; Janet Hill, vice president of Alexander & Associates; Steve Largent, former Oklahoma Representative; Andrea Fischer Newman, chairwoman of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan; Jerry Porras, professor emeritus of organizational behavior at Stanford University; and Judy Woodruff, CNN contributor. Charles E. Young, former president of the Universities of Florida and California at Los Angeles, is rejoining the commission.
Six current and former field hockey players at Frostburg State University pleaded guilty to hazing charges in an initiation rite that nearly killed a freshman woman, the Associated Press reported. The six women were fined $300 and placed on a year of probation for their roles in urging teammates to drink so much that one ended up hospitalized with a blood-alcohol level four times the legal limit.
The Center of the American Experiment, a conservative group in Minnesota, on Tuesday launched a new Web site, IntellectualTakeout.com, for college students. Organizers said that they hoped to provide information and ideas in the battle of ideas on campus.
