  • Following several student suicides, New York University is shutting off balconies in some of its dormitories, to the dismay of students. An editorial in The Washington Square News, the student newspaper, praised the university for taking the suicide problem seriously, but said that "infantilizing its students is not the answer."

The decision came in a lawsuit filed by a group of alumni and faculty members, part of a broader dispute with trustees over governance.
  • The University of Georgia has agreed to modify a mural in a dormitory to avoid using a racial slur that offended some students. The mural depicts events in the fight to integrate the university. Rodney Bennett, Georgia's interim vice president for student affairs, said, "We believe these revisions represent an appropriate compromise among the various interests, which range from concern over the inclusion of a racial slur to concern that removing that word would cloud the true historical impact of those events."
