The month of May has been terrifically busy for me. I moved 3,000 miles from Corvallis, Oregon to Columbia, South Carolina. That's right, a Beaver alum has entered Gamecock country. Many have asked why I made the move from the Pacific Northwest to the Southeast. The answer is very simple: I fell in love.
While I was on the road taking the "StollerCoaster" from one end of the country to the other, my RSS feeds piled up, emails came in, and I barely had time to tweet or post anything on Facebook.
I spent yesterday reading through thousands of entries in Google Reader, checking Twitter favorites, and trying to achieve some inbox stability. Here are a few of the interesting items (note that Google came out with a lot of news while I was on the road/unplugged) that I found whilst digitally unpacking:
- Keynote and session videos from Google I/O - It's always interesting to see the latest, greatest tech that comes out of this Google event.
- Graduate with Google Apps - Google wants college grads to become "Google Guides."
- A new kind of computer: Chromebook - Joshua Kim wants one and Jeff Lail already has a Chromebook. For now, I'm sticking with my MacBook Pro.
- How Furman University got more than 50,000 views with a Flashmob - Flashmobs work because people like surprises. Sure they might be a bit passe for external audiences, but they bring a lot of joy/buzz for a school's community. Love the camera work on this one.
- eduStyle - The most comprehensive listing of higher education web sites on the web. A great place to go if you're looking for design inspiration.
- Microsoft to Acquire Skype - I actually found out about this somewhere between Utah and Colorado. I use Skype all of the time. I even use it for Student Affairs Live. Please Microsoft, do not make Skype another Hotmail. You know what I mean.
- Reframing the Debate - An introduction to the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education - First thing I noticed about the CFHE, there aren't any Student Affairs associations/personnel connected to it. How about we start over and make the campaign a bit less siloed.
- My pal Ed Cabellon is raising funds to create a scholarship for the #SAgrow program - The #SAgrow program/hashtag matches up student affairs graduate students with current SA professionals.
- National Conference on Student Recruitment, Marketing, and Retention - According to the NCSRMR Twitter account, more than 500 enrollment professionals have registered for the conference (July 26-28, Denver, Colorado). I'm thrilled that I get to go to this year's event. Stay tuned for a blog post on some of the sessions.
- ACUHO-I Annual Conference & Exposition - I'm going to be the Social Media Expert-in-Residence and a featured speaker at this event. It's 94 degrees in Columbia right now. I hope I'll be prepared for the heat in New Orleans in July!
