When people talk about the word in general or a specific accountability measure, it’s sometimes hard to realize people are talking about the same thing. Some describe higher education as badly in need of more accountability – to students and their tuition paying parents for the quality of education, and to the taxpayers for their investments in higher education. Others see accountability as a buzzword that allows bureaucrats to dictate educational practices that may provide little help for anyone, but a lot of extra work for faculty members.
