The University of Pennsylvania has nominated swimmer Lia Thomas as one of its two candidates for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year award, according to an NCAA press release listing all 577 nominees.

This year Thomas became the first transgender woman to win an NCAA swimming championship. Her success prompted a public outcry—including from her own teammates—about fairness in women’s sports competition.

Penn’s latest move will likely do little to quell the controversy.

“Hell of an accomplishment to be woman of the year after only being a woman for a couple of years,” tweeted Fox Sports journalist and Outkick founder Clay Travis.

The NCAA’s women-of-the-year selection committee will narrow down the nominees to the top 10 athletes from each division and then select a total of nine finalists—three from each division—before choosing the winner later this year.
