The University of Michigan announced Friday that it will keep Ron Weiser's name on a campus building, despite comments he made about politicians, The Detroit Free Press reported. He is a major donor and a member of the Board of Regents.

In March, Weiser referred to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat; Attorney General Dana Nessel; and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson as "witches." He also used the word "assassination" when asked what Republicans could do about U.S. representatives Peter Meijer and Fred Upton, Republicans who voted in favor of impeaching then-president Trump. Faculty have asked for his name to be removed from a campus building.

President Mark Schlissel said, "Having considered these factors and weighed the difficult questions they raise, I have determined that I will not recommend to the regents that they violate the gift agreement and change the name of Weiser Hall. I have opted to continue to build on the shared ground with Regent Weiser in support of core mission work of the university and will continue to assert university values when there is disagreement."
