Medaille College, a private four-year institution located in Buffalo, N.Y., is suing a local chemical plant over concern that the plant’s emissions are harming students’ health.

The college’s sports fields are located just 100 yards away from PVS Chemical, which produces sulfuric acid for use in the production of semiconductors, The Buffalo News reported. The college has suspended all activity on the sports fields until air quality improves.

In its lawsuit, Medaille says the sulfur dioxide fumes produced by the plant are excessive, and the college is seeking a court order that would limit their production, as well as award compensatory and punitive damages. The college reportedly lost out on a $560,000 contract with a youth soccer organization after parents raised health concerns.
