Five top administrators at Stockton University in New Jersey received $6,000 to $7,000 bonuses during the coronavirus pandemic as the university was planning to furlough faculty members and staff members due to a budget crisis, according to a report by Politico.
Stockton’s vice president for student affairs, interim provost and executive vice president, vice president for facilities and operations, chief information officer, and vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer received the bonuses in June 2020, reported Politico, which obtained documents from the university through an open records request. Stockton's president, Harvey Kesselman, defended the payments as fair compensation for the overtime worked by administrators during the pandemic and said the staff members receiving payments are not entitled to compensatory time or overtime pay.
Faculty members told Politico they felt frustrated and betrayed after learning about the bonus payments. Some said they spent much of their unpaid furloughs working -- developing lesson plans for asynchronous instruction, grading papers and supporting students with mental health concerns.
