In another sign of the prominence historically Black colleges and universities are seeing in the upcoming Biden administration, Delaware State University president Tony Allen was named chief executive officer of the committee organizing the Jan. 20 inauguration.
Allen, who was also a member of Biden’s transition advisory committee, has a 25-year relationship with the president-elect. He was Biden’s speechwriter in the Senate in the 1990s.
Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Monday also named three others to the committee, which will work with congressional leaders to organize the swearing-in ceremony.
Allen was not available for comment Monday but acknowledged in a statement the challenge of organizing the inauguration in the midst of limits on gatherings during the pandemic. “This year's inauguration will look different amid the pandemic, but we will honor the American inaugural traditions and engage Americans across the country while keeping everybody healthy and safe,” he said.
