Students at Clemson University ended their sit-in, which began on Oct. 21, following a letter from university president, Jim Clements, WYFF News has reported.
The student group, Students for Survivors Coalition, began the sit-in demanding more resources for survivors of sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Their demands included the hiring of three experienced advocates, separation of the Title IX and interpersonal violence prevention offices, and creation of a women's and gender center. The group said they would sit outside Sikes Hall on campus until they received acknowledgment from Clements.
"For much of the past week, a group of students dedicated to combatting sexual and interpersonal violence has been working to raise awareness of these important issues through peaceful demonstrations on our campus," Clements wrote in the letter to campus. "Clemson has a well-deserved reputation as one of the safest college campuses in the country, and we will continue to make this a priority. Sexual violence has no place on our campus and in our society, and we are committed to making continuous improvement in this, and all, areas related to the safety and well being of our students."
Student leaders have said this was the acknowledgment they were looking for and they hope the administration will fulfill promises related to sexual assault and interpersonal violence prevention and response.
