The National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts would each receive a $12.5 million funding increase in a spending package released Tuesday by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies.
The fiscal year 2020 spending bill would provide a total of $167.5 million for both agencies, which are the biggest supporters of humanities research on college campuses. President Trump has called for eliminating the NEH and NEA in three consecutive budget proposals.
"After four years of incremental increases for the NEH, this substantial increase reflects the robust support we have built on the Hill," the National Humanities Alliance said in an email to supporters Tuesday.
The appropriations subcommittee will hold a hearing to mark up the spending bill today.
