Joy Karega-Mason, a former assistant professor of rhetoric and composition at Oberlin College who was fired in 2016 over her anti-Semitic posts on social media, is suing the institution. The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. District Court in Cleveland, claims breach of contract, employment discrimination on the basis of race and retaliation. Karega-Mason, who is black, accuses Oberlin’s administration of instigating false charges of professional misconduct and soliciting student complaints against her, and of manipulating the decision-making process in her case, such as by shutting out black faculty members. The suit also says that a faculty review committee recommended against her dismissal. Karega-Mason is seeking a jury trial and more than $885,000 in damages. An Oberlin spokesperson said the college doesn't comment on pending litigation.
