Students at Simpson College are protesting after Jay Simmons, college president, announced that he will cut 13 faculty positions, the art department and French and German majors, KCCI reported.

“We had no idea anything was coming,” a Simpson student told KCCI. The cuts are part of a prioritization program that aims to strengthen the college’s financial and enrollment situation. Because there were relatively few art, French and German majors, it made sense to funnel that money elsewhere, Simmons said. The 13 employees will leave the college over the next six to 24 months, and the clinical health science major will also be restructured. All current students studying in affected departments will be able to complete their major.

Several student forums are scheduled in the coming weeks.
