The University System of Maryland will stop giving bonuses to Chancellor Robert Caret, The Baltimore Sun reported. The announcement came amid criticism of the system for awarding Caret a $75,000 bonus and a $30,000 raise on top of his base salary of $600,000. Legislators said the bonus sent the wrong message at a time when many families struggle with tuition.

Caret told the Sun he had earned the bonus. "Do I feel after 21 years as a campus or system head that I deserve that? Yes," Caret said. "Do I think I deliver wherever I've been? Yes. So I don't apologize for it."
