  • The Western Association of Schools and Colleges's Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges on Monday upheld its June decision to revoke the accreditation of Compton Community College, saying that the evidence supporting the earlier ruling was "substantial, sound and credible." The California Community Colleges system said it would fight the decision. “We have made significant progress since the commission’s June announcement,” Chancellor Marshall (Mark) Drummond said Monday, adding that the system would "pursue every possible legal remedy to keep the college open."
  • Corinthian Colleges Inc. on Monday filed a notice with the Securities and Exchange Commission indicating that the attorney general of Florida is investigating advertising and marketing practices at Florida Metropolitan University, a Corinithian subsidiary. The notice said that no claims had been filed by Florida officials against the university or Corinthian, and pledged cooperation with the inquiry.
  • Two top federal biologists, heavily recruited by Stanford University, are instead taking jobs at a research institute in Singapore, The San Jose Mercury News reported (free registration required). The biologists work on stem cells and say that they are better off in Singapore, where there aren't as many regulations that limit research.
  • The Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities announced Monday that it was creating a new panel to study ways to strengthen the American presidency. Gerald L. Baliles, a former Virginia governor who led a similar panel a decade ago, will chair the effort.
