  • The U.S. Education Department says that La Salle University, in Philadelphia, violated crime reporting requirements by failing to report incidents involving alleged sexual assualts by members of the men's basketball team in 2003 and 2004, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. La Salle officials say that they did fulfill their obligations, and are appealing.
  • Franklin Pierce College, in New Hampshire, has agreed to open an office and to start offering programs in Goodyear, Ariz. The college will start with a small office and distance programs, but is expected in March to approve the creation of classroom space in Goodyear. Franklin Pierce is among several private colleges that have been studying invitations from Goodyear, a fast-growing city outside Phoenix, to set up shop there.
  • The top six managers of Harvard University's endowment earned a collective $13.3 million in compensation for the fiscal year that ended June 30 -- a small fraction of what the top six managers have earned in some previous years. The pay for these officials is regularly criticized by some as inappropriate for higher education -- and is regularly defended by Harvard as the price of earning the kinds of returns that have the university's endowment approaching $30 billion. A column in today's Boston Globe explains that this year's decline doesn't represent some shift in philosophy at Harvard, but turnover among the leaders of the endowment fund. The same compensation formulas are in place, but the rewards for managers will likely come in a few years, assuming their investment choices have paid off.
  • Participation in the General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program increased 2.2 percent in 2005, with the total number of candidates in the United States who tested topping 680,000, according to data released today by the American Council on Education, which runs the program. The total number of people who passed the GED rose 4.4 percent, to 423,714.
