The following colleges have announced their commencement speakers for spring 2016:

  • City College of the City University of New York: Michelle Obama, the first lady.
  • City Colleges of Chicago: Arne Duncan, former U.S. secretary of education.
  • Colorado College: Marcia McNutt, a geophysicist who on July 1 will become the first woman president of the National Academy of Sciences.
  • Denison University: Sister Helen Prejean, the human rights activist.
  • Guilford College: The Reverend Dr. William J. Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP.
  • Quinebaug Valley Community College: Michael Askew, vice president and general counsel of General Dynamics/Electric Boat.
  • Robert Morris University: U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald.
  • Saint Mary’s College of California: Mahershala Ali, the actor; and Tom Torlakson, superintendent of California’s public school system.
  • Saint Vincent College: John J. Degnan, chairman of the board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
  • University of the South: Charlie Rose, the journalist.
  • University of Texas at Austin: Sara Martinez Tucker, former U.S. under secretary of education and a member of the University of Texas System Board of Regents.
  • Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology: Michael P. Huerta, administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration.
  • Winston-Salem State University: Melissa Harris-Perry, the author and the Maya Angelou Chair at Wake Forest University.
