The Arizona Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a new law that will create two at-large board seats for the Maricopa County Community College District, which has had only five board members, each representing districts, The Arizona Republic reported. A lower court had thrown out the law, which was challenged because it applied only to Maricopa. The law imposed the at-large board requirement on districts with more than 3 million people. As a result, only Maricopa was covered. The lower court said that this made the law unconstitutional. But the Supreme Court reversed the ruling. No opinion was issued because the Supreme Court expedited consideration of the case so that the law could be carried out in this fall's elections.
