Lawyers for Joe Mixon, a University of Oklahoma football player, on Friday released video of him attacking another Oklahoma student in 2014. The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled this month that the video was a public record. Local speculation is that Mixon decided to release it now to avoid it coming out just before he is due to play in the Sugar Bowl Jan. 2. The punch by Mixon left the other student with fractured bones, The Oklahoman reported.

Mixon was suspended for a season of football and charged with a misdemeanor in the incident, but a plea deal resulted in his being punished with only a year of probation and 100 hours of community service. Many have said that the university and the legal system didn't take the attack sufficiently seriously. While the video does show the female student pushing Mixon, many say his response should be seen as nothing short of an assault.
